A Look At The Caspian Horse
Posted Under: Horses
It is said that both Alexander the Great and Darius the Great rode the Caspian horse. These were beloved in the Middle East and were often given as royal gifts. The possible worship of these horses was suggested in times past because of them being so well thought of.
The extinction of the Caspian horse breed was considered until 1965, then it was found again in the mountains surrounding the Caspian Sea. When they were found, they were given the name of “Caspians”, and were taken to be bred at a center in Iran. Since the number of the Caspian horses in existence totaled only 50, many breeding groups along with the Royal Horse Society of Iran worked towards restoring the Caspian horse population to safe levels.
Their restoration work has been successful. Current estimations count the Caspian horses at around 1000, and quickly they are becoming loved and popular again.
This is indeed a breed with many fine and attractive qualities. This type of horse has qualities which are similar to the Arabian breed, although they are more distinguished and stylish. They are somewhat smaller in size than the average horse, at around 10-13 hands, which makes them an excellent choice for smaller children to ride.
Friendly, fun, smart, amusing, and probing are a few great qualities of these horses. Loyal and fun, these are great to own just as a pet, but are useful for much more than this. Running and jumping are only the beginning of a Caspian horse’s qualities, it also does extremely well for showing.
Since this is a rare breed of horse, it can quite possibly be a more difficult find depending upon where in the world you live. For a while they were restricted from being imported from Iran, but now they are available in some stables where they are carefully guarded and bred, but keep in mind that you will pay a pretty penny for such a rare horse type as the Caspian horse.
